Be Safe This Summer

Be Safe This Summer | Newark Firemen Federal Credit UnionWith summer on the horizon, we must think about the activities that will come with it.  Camping, barbecues, trips to the beach and so on.  What we must remember, and share with our friends and family, are tips for summer fire safety.  Many accidents occur due to one careless act.  Everyone needs to be aware to reduce the risk of fire, whether at home or out in the woods.
During the summer, we are party to many fireworks displays.  Some people even like to have their own personal show in their backyard.  Due to the dangerous nature of fireworks themselves, the brilliant light shows we are able to enjoy are best left to the professionals.
Summer is also the perfect time for grilling!  It’s a backyard hobby that just about everyone enjoys and takes part in.  So let us all be cautious and follow some of these tips:
  • Do not wear loose clothing while cooking on the grill or barbecue.
  • Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line.  Make sure the tubes are not blocked.
  • Exercise caution when using lighter fluid.
  • Do not add lighter fluid to an already ignited grill or barbecue, as the flame can flashback up to the container and cause it to explode.
  • Dispose of hot coals properly by dousing them in plenty of water.

During the summer, camping is a pastime many people enjoy.  It is important to remember that we are taking up temporary residence in the home of many forms of wildlife.  In order to keep ourselves and the environment safe, the following tips should be adhered to:

  • Build campfires in a location where they can’t spread (away from grass and leaves).
  • Never leave campfires unattended.
  • Keep plenty of water and a shovel nearby to douse a fire when you’re done.
So, remember to be vigilant and help others to be aware of what they can do to keep themselves safe this summer.  For more information, feel free to visit the U.S. Fire administration website.
